QoA October 4

The first online portofolio page was concerning artwork after I did a google seacrh for online portfolio's http://www.espectro.com/ It was a collection of artwork that you could click on if you like it and it would give you a brief description of the artist that made it and in some case other work that they had.

Next site I went to appeared to be more of a professional presentation entitled Hot links at http://www.photographyreview.com/HTL_91crx.aspx
it feature a bunch of different photograpghy portfolio's and when you click on a particular photo feature a bunch of work that the artist complied into sort of a online photo resume. It was different from the other one in that it's links were more set up almost like a pop up it look like a expensively made web-site but it had the similar characteristic of most of the other online journals in that it had information available if you liked the displayed content.

QoA for Sept. 27

My research was about Hip-Hop web sites. I investigated the ways they are constructed and what makes some better than others. I have learned about the different elements that I may one day want to include in my own web site Lord willing I get one.

Online Portfolio's

The Portfolio's all have one obvious thing in common and that's picture of there work with brief captions that decribe them. The portfolios usually have a opening statement which briefly tells the extent of there work experience such as: how many clients they have worked for. I liked the way they made it easy to access there material so the would be employer could readily see there work and make a decision. In many cases it was a very professional tone, not a playful one because the audience is the employer. The colors were mainly blue's and whites to give a cool feel to it and not an eccentric look. I think online portfolio's is great thing I think it is a good way to showcase yourself to possible employers...if ya got something to showcase.

QOW3: Our Writing Culture

Some things may never change "someone writes and someone reads" but the style in which the writing writes has been changing in order to adapt to the different mediums the audience is going to be reading this from. The ever change and evolving technologies has created a "new culture" of writing. This new culture is alot more visual and colorful, I think this is the most notable difference in writing today.

When we were children our favorite book always were the ones that had the best illusrations; less words were better, that is why in many children's books there is only about one sentence per page. When we got older we began to be drawn book with more content than substance or in alot of cases today were thrown off the idea of reading all together. The web has created it own genre which is leading many people back to the days of leisurely reading because a format that has been endeared to us since our youth.

The web genre features more pictures to go along with our stories and when that's not good enough even video footage where we can see exactly what is going on. Web writing is more concise, less wordy and striaght to the point. It's a not exactly one sentence per page like children's book but the formula is in place. With the new age of television and other modern technology, people like to be shown more than told, that is why media writing will feature more graphics, charts, pictures and colorful tables in order to convey its message in a more exicitng fashion.

Q0W2: Blogging...a good thing?

I agree with the statement "Who cares if a student, to save time, types ‘u’ for ‘you?’ I want to see them writing more and if that means breaking a few rules, that’s OK.” I know from my own experience that writing on the computer more has greatly helped my typing speed. I think that cduting a few corners can be over looked when the benefits of this medium are evaluated.

Writing on such forums as Instant Messanger, Hotmail, Bloggers, etc. has allowed me to a have a fun way to practice typing. I think that it also must be noted that although one maybe typing "U" for "You" all the other word he typed most be correctly spelled in most cases in order for the person recieving the message to able to interpret it correctly. This has had me run into plently of situations where critical thinking was necessary, sometimes even using a dictionary whether that be using Microsoft Word or other means in order to be able to spell a word I would other wise have spoken over perhaps a phone coversation correctly.

I think that blogging is a good thing because it gets people over there fears of using the computer. Now it's not just used for perhaps research or papers but now as a means of commmunicating with friends and loved ones. I believe that it is responsible of helping many people become more computer savvy, and faster typers.

QoW: Writing for the Web- Caution's Take

I haven't had much experience in writing for the web, but I have produced articles for my internship that have been posted on the web. My major is communications here at Niagara University and I hope to be able to use this degree to get into some form of writing for the media whether that be for Telvision or Print mediums.

I believe that the purpose of writing is defeated if you cannot kept the reader interested enough to finish the article, so when I write for the web I think I will use visuals, statistical data, and even sound effects whenever possible in order to effciently convey the intended message and keep the reader interested. It is the responsibility of the writer to make reading an experience and not a chore.

I find the best writing on the web has a few elements that make it stand out above the rest. The heading or the name of the article must be able to get the reader's attention. Then the writer must prove knowledge of the field through either wit or facts to establish credibility. When writing for the Web it is sometimes helpful to have names bolded, italized or clickable links in the middle of the text in order the get the reader to want to find out what they are all about. This must all be done with a certain flow that keeps the paper moving. As a consumer this is what is able to keep me along for the ride.

NEW DAY, SAME MESSAGE

This is the second entry in the blogger account. Today was a weird day I had my two week old car go through some battery problems, I needed campus safety to give me a jump. I was so upset because I just got this car and it was already acting up with no explaination. I didn't leave the light on or any thing else on in the car so I couldn't think of any reason that it would all of a sudden be dead. It doesn't matter God is still good to me, because he has allowed me to own this beautiful car, problems and all.
